Obsidian Integration
I first heard about “Digital Gardens” while attending the final XOXO (RIP) in 2024. I loved the idea of having a personal space that required the same care and attention as a real garden, and since I was already a real-world gardener, it felt like a perfect fit. Even further, I loved the idea of tracking my real garden in my Digital Garden™, so we’ll see how well I can keep up with that.
I was already using Obsidian, and had experimented previously with publishing Notion pages. My first instinct was to sample the offering by the Obsidian developers; their Publish feature, which was very nice, but left me wanting. It lacked a lot of flexibility, and ultimately was very difficult to customize, even mildly, which put me back on the path of hand-rolling my solution.
Scripts
A huge lift I did to make Obsidian the so-called ideal home for all my stuff, was authoring numerous QuickAdd scripts which fetch things like canonical data for entries in my library. I also integrated with my personal Plex server to fetch movies and anime, and then pair them with canonical info from various API’s. It’s all very easy to use, and makes the process of keeping track of my various catalogues much easier.
